Herniated Discs
Living with a herniated disc impacts every part of your day, making it difficult to work, sleep, or stay active. At Trident Health & Chiropractic, we provide personalized care to reduce pain and restore mobility through conservative, evidence-based treatments.
What Is a Herniated Disc?
The spine relies on cushioning discs between vertebrae to absorb shock and facilitate movement. A herniated disc occurs when the soft center of a disc pushes through its tough outer layer, which can irritate nearby nerves.
More common in the neck and lower back, these injuries can happen suddenly during lifting or sports, or develop over time from general wear and tear.
Symptoms range from mild discomfort to intense nerve pain and limited mobility. While often called a slipped disc, the disc doesn't actually slide out of place; instead, the pain stems from inflammation and damage impacting the surrounding nerves and tissue.
Symptoms of a Herniated Disc
Symptoms can vary depending on the location and severity of the disc injury.
Common symptoms may include:
✔ Lower back or neck pain
✔ Pain travelling into the arm or leg
✔ Sciatica symptoms
✔ Tingling or numbness
✔ Muscle weakness
✔ Burning or sharp nerve pain
✔ Pain when sitting or bending
✔ Reduced flexibility and movement
✔ Pain that worsens with coughing or sneezing
Some herniated discs may cause very little pain, while others can significantly affect daily activities and quality of life.
Common Causes & Risk Factors
Herniated discs can develop for several reasons, including:
✔ Repetitive lifting or bending
✔ Poor posture
✔ Sedentary lifestyles
✔ Heavy manual work
✔ Sports injuries
✔ Age-related spinal degeneration
✔ Sudden twisting movements
✔ Weak core and supporting muscles
✔ Long periods of sitting
✔ Previous spinal injuries
Over time, spinal discs naturally lose hydration and flexibility, making them more vulnerable to injury and irritation.
